Cannabis is a diploid plant with ten pairs of chromosomes, one of which determines sex. Research into cannabis genetics has shown that male plants carry an X and a Y chromosome while females carry two X chromosomes, a system uncommon among flowering plants. Most species produce both sexes on a single individual. This separation is what allows growers to raise unpollinated females for seedless flower.
